In this presentation, Sigurbjörg Jóhannesdóttir shares her personal journey into the world of artificial intelligence and how she utilized various AI tools to develop a self-study module for university teachers as part of the European PLACEDU project. The project focuses on the challenges of distance learning and how digital solutions can enhance learning experiences and foster social connectedness in higher education. The presentation covers methodologies such as desk research, focus group interviews, and mobile ethnography, and describes how the DigCompEdu framework served as a foundation for designing educational content. It also explores how students creatively experimented with AI in the course The Internet and Information Retrieval at the University of Iceland, producing diverse projects using tools such as ChatGPT, Bard, Bing Chat, Copilot, and more. The talk highlights the benefits and limitations of AI technologies in education, emphasizes the importance of critical thinking, and illustrates the process of finding the “right AI assistant” to support teaching and the development of digital learning.
