Description
Artificial intelligence has in recent years become increasingly prominent in higher education and now influences all aspects of teaching. To develop appropriate policy and support within the university community, it is essential to understand teachers’ attitudes toward AI and their experiences of using it. This pilot study explores how teachers at the University of Iceland perceive and experience AI in teaching, how they assess students’ use of AI, and what they believe universities should do to support them in a changing educational landscape.A survey consisting of 34 questions was distributed via SurveyMonkey to 2,007 university teachers, including adjunct and sessional staff. By July 2025, 280 teachers had participated. Preliminary findings indicated that most teachers were positive toward AI and considered it useful in teaching. The most common uses of AI were for brainstorming and course planning, while it was less frequently used to design courses, create teaching materials, write exams, or evaluate assignments. Some teachers also used AI for proofreading, translation, data analysis, and programming.
However, concerns also emerged, particularly regarding data security and ethical issues. Many participants expressed limited trust in the quality of AI-generated content. A significant number reported having little knowledge of AI and requested training, clearer institutional policies, and access to selected AI tools and support. The study underscores the importance of universities listening to teachers’ perspectives in order to respond effectively to this evolving landscape.
