Description
In this presentation, Sigurbjörg Jóhannesdóttir shares how she used a variety of artificial intelligence tools to develop a self-study module on teaching and learning in distance education for university teachers, as part of the European PLACEDU project. The presentation is based on her own experience as both a researcher and participant, demonstrating how AI can serve as a tool for creativity, support, and self-reflection in educational development. She explores how AI was used to design content that responds to challenges identified by PLACEDU research—such as lack of presence, interactivity, and social connection in online teaching. In this process, she tested various AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Bing Chat, Google Bard, Copilot) and built a personal AI assistant by training language models with relevant materials and clear instructional goals.
At the same time, her students in the course The Internet and Information Retrieval experimented with a wide range of AI tools in their own projects. These resulted in presentations, videos, essays, guides, and other creative outputs that showcased how AI can support dynamic and engaged learning.
The presentation reflects a journey from frustration to creative empowerment and highlights the potential of engaging with AI through critical thinking, creativity, and technological literacy.
