Digital competence of teachers and AI literacy: Modernization of teaching through the use of generative artificial intelligence

Activity: Talk or presentationOral presentation

Description

The slides introduce a comprehensive and forward-looking approach to how university teachers can enhance their teaching by developing digital competence and AI literacy. The presentation discusses the key challenges and opportunities associated with integrating generative AI into higher education and how teachers can adopt new tools and methods in a responsible, critical, and creative way.

Emphasis is placed on digital competence as a fundamental prerequisite for engaging students, supporting learning, and improving the quality of teaching. The presentation highlights international competence frameworks, such as DigCompEdu, which help teachers understand how they can develop digital competence across multiple domains—from teaching and assessment to learner empowerment and responsible use of technology.

Significant attention is also given to AI literacy, meaning teachers’ and students’ understanding of how AI works, how to use it responsibly, and how to avoid misuse. The slides illuminate findings from a thematic analysis of teachers’ AI-related challenges, showing concerns related to technical proficiency, ethical questions, assessment practices, and monitoring student work.

Furthermore, the presentation demonstrates how AI can be a practical support tool in teachers’ daily work—for example in developing learning materials, assignments, assessment tasks, and lesson planning—and how new generative AI tools can save time, improve quality, and broaden pedagogical possibilities.

Finally, participants are guided through group work designed to help them reflect on the positive and negative impacts of AI in teaching and to formulate shared solutions for using the technology thoughtfully and professionally. The task is based on the Place Mat method and is intended to strengthen critical discussion and collaboration among teachers.
