This presentation is designed for new university teachers and provides practical insights, strategies, and resources for transitioning into the academic environment. It begins by addressing common challenges faced by new lecturers, including diverse teaching roles, changing pedagogical expectations, integration of technology, and working with varied student groups. The session explores the characteristics of effective university teaching, differentiating between learning-centered teaching and student-centered learning design, and offers examples of each. It introduces the MUSIC model of motivation—Empowerment, Usefulness, Success, Interest, and Caring—as a framework for fostering student engagement. Participants are guided on where to find institutional support, from teaching development services to library resources. The presentation also covers best practices for the first class, emphasizing relationship-building, clarifying expectations, and creating a positive learning community. By the end, participants will be equipped with strategies to strengthen their teaching approach, enhance student learning, and navigate university structures effectively.
