The lecture titled "Navigating the Digital Fjords: Fishing for the Futures of Higher Education with AI in Iceland" was presented at the EDUCERE Nordic Network workshop on May 13-14, 2024, in Jyväskylä, Finland. This presentation, led by Sigurbjörg Jóhannesdóttir, Skúlína Kjartansdóttir, and Sólveig Jakobsdóttir from the University of Iceland, explored the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in higher education, particularly within the Icelandic context.

Key topics included the historical and contemporary impact of AI on global higher education, emphasizing its potential to enhance personalized learning, streamline administrative processes, and foster data-driven decision-making. The presentation highlighted Iceland's AI policy initiatives, governmental actions, and collaborations with international tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, and OpenAI to support the development and application of AI technologies in education.

The session also addressed critical views on AI in education, discussing its limitations, potential social harms, and environmental costs. Practical examples of AI usage by teachers and students at the University of Iceland were provided, showcasing applications ranging from automated problem reframing to the creation of instructional materials and learning assessments.
