Organisation profile

Organisation profile

The Department of Rural Tourism was established in 1996. Since its foundation, the emphasis has been on applied studies and close engagement with local communities and the tourism sector. Programmes are designed to prepare students for professional work, while also providing a basis for further academic studies in Iceland and abroad.

Practical training is an integral part of most programmes, and some lead to ranger certification. Teaching and research reflect ongoing changes within Icelandic tourism and are closely connected to current challenges in rural areas and the industry.
