Háskólinn á Akureyri var stofnaður 1987. Fyrsti rektor skólans var Haraldur Bessason.
Frá upphafi hefur vöxtur HA verið hraður. Námsframboð hefur aukist jafnt og þétt. Nemendum og starfsfólki hefur fjölgað. Ýmsir samstarfsaðilar hafa komið til og byggingar hafa risið.
Haustið 2017 varð HA fullvaxta háskóli með nám á öllum þrepum háskólanáms þegar skólinn fékk heimild til að bjóða upp á doktorsnám. Fyrstu doktorsnemarnir innrituðust við skólann í lok árs 2018 og fyrsta doktorsvörnin við skólann fór fram haustið 2022.
Rektor háskólans á Akureyri er Áslaug Ásgeirsdóttir.
