Hólar University offers academic programmes closely connected to the sustainable use of natural resources and innovation. The University specialises in rural tourism, event management, tourism management and hospitality, aquaculture, marine and freshwater biology, and equine studies, with a particular emphasis on riding and riding instruction. Studies are offered either as on-campus programmes, where students live in Hólar, or as blended learning programmes (distance learning combined with on-site study periods), independent of students’ place of residence.

The University’s academic fields received formal accreditation in 2008. Its activities are grounded in the educational and cultural history of Hólar and in Iceland’s distinctive strengths: the Icelandic horse, rich terrestrial, freshwater  and marine ecosystems, and a long tradition of sustainable resource use, natural abundance, cultural heritage, and hospitality. Hólar University operates in accordance with the Higher Education Act (No. 63/2006) and the Act on Public Higher Education Institutions (No. 85/2008), as amended. The University is a specialised higher education institution characterised by close personal interaction and short lines of communication.
