Abstract
Bacteroides oralis strain ATCC no. 15930 was compared with three reference strains of B. melaninogenicus (NCTC nos. 9336, 9337 and 9338) in terms of their microscopic and colonial morphology, their behaviour in a series of simple biochemical tests and disc antibiotic sensitivity tests. The B. oralis strain produced black pigmented colonies on blood agar and the extracted pigment appeared identical with that produced by the B. melaninogenicus strains. The results of the other tests were also essentially similar. Unless valid reasons can be given for the separation of these reference strains into two species, it is suggested that B. oralis strain ATCC no. 15930 be re-classified as B. melaninogenicus.
