Abstract
The characteristic spin-like singlet-triplet configuration of excitons bound to hole-attractive neutral associates in GaP results from a quenching of the hole orbital angular momentum in a local compressive axial strain field. A smaller crystal-field splitting of the multivalley degenerate electron states of excitons bound to such complexes is proposed to explain the additional BE states observed in several cases. Photoluminescence data on centres involving the hole-attractive substituents CuGa and Sbp serve as examples.
