Development of a new abutment connection for rapid construction

Abstract

This paper describes tests on a new connection between a precast abutment wall and a cast-in-place foundation suitable for rapid construction in seismic regions. The primary goal of this study is to reduce on-site construction time. Its features include both speed and simplicity of erection, as well as generous tolerances. The foundation concept is termed a ‘wet socket’ connection. Abutment wall elements are precast without exposed reinforcement and feature strategically placed ducts to allow the foundation´s top mat reinforcement to pass through the wall unimpeded. Two scaled specimens were constructed and tested as part of this research. The first specimen served as a reference and was detailed according to current standards in Iceland. The second specimen included the new socket connection. Lateral-load tests on the new connection were completed in 2022. Overall, the performance of the new connection was quite satisfactory and comparable to the reference specimen. The new connection will be implemented in an upcoming road reconstruction and bridge project in North-Iceland.
