Export of Iceland's Hydroelectric Power Using a HVDC Submarine Cable

Research output: Book/ReportCommissioned report

Abstract

The purpose of this report is to review some technical and economical aspects of exporting electrical energy using Iceland's untapped hydroelectric resources to Scotland by means of a High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) submarine cable. A cost estimate for this transmission scheme is presented, based on recent figures from the manufacturing side of both the cable and terminal equipment. This estimate together with the most recent figures for energy cost from hydroelectric projects in Iceland and energy prices abroad can serve as a basis for a decision regarding a more detailed study. Although Scotland is basically assumed as the recipient of the power, the possibility to export to Scandinavia is briefly discussed.
