Abstract
This article discusses the place of fishing activities and coastal economies in social scientific thought, some of the major issues developed in the relevant literature, and recent trends in maritime anthropology; the category of fishing; natural and social models of fishing activities and coastal communities; gender relations; ecological knowledge; resource management; and the revitalized ocean.
