Abstract
The material choice for prosthetic reconstructions has become more and more challenging for dentists and technicians nowadays, due to the increasing variety of possibilities and indications. In a very short timeframe, the industry adapted and extended the indications for the use of different materials, especially high translucent zirconia, which can be used monolithically today. On the one hand, this offers promising new reconstructive treatment options; on the other hand, sufficient long-term data for the use of these new materials and their technical and biological properties is still missing. This article presents a systematic evaluation of the different materials and their clinical indications, and should serve the team of dentist and technician as a guide; not only in choosing the adaquate material but also in deciding between monolithic and facially veneered reconstructions. Besides material specific indications, esthetic factors and the up to now limited amount of clinical survival rates are taken into consideration.
