Abstract
Aim: To investigate the frequency of absconding from psychiatric wards at Landspitali – The National University Hospital in Iceland over a one year period and its antecedents. Method: The participants were 14 staff members at the Mental Health Services at Landspítali -The National University Hospital in Iceland and eight patients who absconded. Mixed method was used, e.g. both qualitative and quantitative methods. Methods of grounded theory were used analysing qualitative data. Data was collected from nursing and medical records and accident and incident records and also about number of patients that absconded, from which wards, the day and time of absconding, the duration of their absconding, where they went, what they did and when they came back and how, and their diagnosis. Results: 34 patients absconded in one year in a total of 84 occasions. The main antecedents were patient’s desire for substance use, application of coercive measures, lifting of such measures and patient’s absconding behavior. Conclusions: Few patients are behind all the abscondings and compared to international studies they are rather infrequent. Even though the antecedents of abscondings are often visible they can be difficult to prevent. Keywords: Absconding from mental health wards, frequency, antecedents, mixed research methods.
