Abstract

This chapter explores the significance of emotion in the Norse chivalric saga Partalopa saga. The study is based on a comparative analysis of emotionality in the saga and the original Old French romance Partonopeu de Blois. The paper explores several aspects that connect emotion with the overall narrative thread, particularly sensuality, knowledge, and the senses. Whereas the Old French romance presents a narrative full of lengthy emotive speeches, the Norse saga substitutes these for the culturally preferred emotive embodied action. However, the relevance of emotionality remains a key aspect of the narrative in the Norse version. The goal is to showcase the saga's cultural decoding of continental romance themes and its simultaneous blending of Norse romance tropes.
