Abstract

This book is about values education in the early years. In societies all over the globe, values are being actualised more than ever, particularly in relation to the large migration streams around the globe. Questions on values for the good life of today and for the future are being raised and find their way into everyday life in institutions like early childhood education and care (ECEC). A range of values are involved in encounters between parents, children and educators in the practices of preschools. The main questions raised by the authors of this book concern the following: What are key-values in ECEC settings of today, and how is values education experienced from the educators' and children's points of view? What kinds of dilemmas and value conflicts do educators encounter? What important implications for ethical and reflexive practice might follow? The authors are researchers from the Nordic countries, some using data from a Nordic participatory action research project (ValuEd) and some from other Nordic studies. Their common interest is in ethical and reflexive practice in the early years.
