International research shows that the working landscape of teachers is changing as they face increasingly diverse classrooms. Expectations of teachers are high and growing, and recent data point to an increase in teacher burnout, due to their working conditions. School principals face similar demands and challenges.
Extensive international research on teacher well-being highlights the importance of focusing on teacher self-efficacy and collective teacher efficacy. High levels of teacher self and collective efficacy influence academic outcomes of students and is associated with student motivation and positive teacher outcomes, such as job satisfaction and retention.
In this key-note, questions about the type of qualitative improvements in teachers’ working conditions are needed will be raised, both for teachers in schools as well as strategies to make teaching careers more attractive to high-achieving students. International research emphasises that special attention should be paid to how teacher conditions can be improved for them to enjoy deep professional knowledge, a high degree of professional autonomy and a collaborative culture.
